Bonalu Festival

Bonalu festival is a Telangana state traditional Hindu festival centered on the Goddess Mahakali. Bonalu is celebrated annually in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, as well as in other parts of Telangana state. It is celebrated in the month of Ashada Masam, which is around July and/or August.

What is special in bonalu festival? 

Bonalu is a Hindu festival where Goddess Mahakali is worshiped. The festival is celebrated usually during Ashada Masam (July-August). Special poojas are held for various versions of the Goddess Mahakali in different parts of the state but primarily the avatar Yellama of the Goddess is worshipped. 


Who is Potharaju? 

 'Potharaju' is considered as the brother of the Hindu Goddess Mahakali and takes on the role of protecting women carrying bonam. Potharaju is the centre of attraction and adds the much-needed colour and flavour to the Bonalu festival. 


 How is bonalu festival celebrated? 

 Bonalu is celebrated usually during Ashada Masam that falls in July/August. Special poojas are performed for goddess Yellamma during the first and last day of the festival. The festival is considered as a form of thanksgiving to the Goddess after the fulfillment of vows.
